Lien Fellow Speakers Series - Lifelong Learning System in Singapore

On 19 September 2024, the Lien Fellows Speaker Series was graced by Mr. Tan Kok Yam, Chief Executive of SkillsFuture Singapore and a distinguished Lien Fellow, as its esteemed speaker. Initiated by the Lien Ying Chow Legacy Fellowship, the series has served as a beacon of knowledge dissemination and exchange since its inception in 2014, providing a vital platform for facilitating insightful discussions aimed at fostering intellectual growth and contributing to social and economic advancement. The talk, moderated by Dr. Celia Lee, Senior Research Fellow at Nanyang Centre for Public Administration, focused on the Lifelong Learning System in Singapore. During his talk, Mr. Tan provided a comprehensive overview of the evolution of the approach to lifelong learning, the key stakeholders involved, and the targeted policy objectives for each of these stakeholders. What is more, Mr. Tan underscored the significance of the SkillsFuture initiative, a pivotal national movement spearheaded by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). With a vision of creating a nation of lifelong learners—a society that values skills mastery—SSG is committed to enabling individuals from varying starting points to engage in lifelong learning, remain relevant and competitive, and develop fulfilling careers. Mr. Tan also shed lights on the primary forces shaping the contemporary approach to lifelong learning in Singapore. On top of that, Mr. Tan highlighted that the key challenges in advancing adult learning in Singapore and outlined SSG’ proactive and innovative measures to overcome these challenges. The session was further enriched by a dynamic Q&A session, where Mr. Tan elaborated on the considerations SSG makes in designing and selecting SSG-funded training courses. All in all, Mr. Tan’s comprehensive insights provided attendees with a profound understanding of SSG’s efforts to offer Singaporeans opportunities to develop their fullest potential throughout life and its role in nurturing a pervasive culture of lifelong learning and skills mastery.
